Tesla - Despite History (2006)
Film directed, written and narrated by Braco Dimitrijević (2006, 43 min.)
The artist will join us for the screening at the Hotel Metropole on Friday, 22nd April (7pm).
Nikola Tesla together with Einstein was one of the most prominent scientists of the first half of the 20th century. They were also connected by a family link - Einstein’s first wife Mileva, herself a prominent scientist and professor of mathematics at Princeton University, was Tesla’s cousin. For Dimitrijevic the case of Tesla is a starting point for complex reflections on the relativity of criteria which shape the official version of history: why does it take centuries for some ideas to be accepted, why are certain ideas recorded while others fall into oblivion, why are some people glorified while others are forgotten. Filmed at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Nikola Tesla’s Museum in Belgrade, the movie tries to provide answers to those questions from a personal artistic point of view, emphasising not only Tesla’s enormous influence in science but also a possible interaction between his inventiveness and that of 20th century avant-garde art movements.
